Your Baby - 31 Weeks Pregnant

Your baby will gain weight faster than he'll increase in length. By now the baby's lungs and digestive tract are nearly mature. Your baby's irises can now dilate and contract in response to light. Due to the deposits of white fat underneath the skin your baby's skin is no longer red, but is now the wonderful newborn pink color. His fingernails may reach the end of the hands, too. You may worry if you are breathless from walking or sometimes even just sitting that your baby is in danger. This is not true. Your baby is getting plenty of oxygen from your placenta.

Week 31...

Your baby’s crown-to-rump measurement is now about 11 inches (280mm) - almost as tall as a 12-inch ruler. Its weight is at least 2 3⁄4 pounds (1,300 g), the weight of a quart-and-a-half of water.

The baby’s growth in height and weight will begin to slow between now and birth. Even so, your baby will gain about two pounds (896 g) this month.

 

If your baby is born now, it may have a callous on its thumb from sucking it in the womb.

For about the last month, your baby has assumed the fetal position in your uterus. The legs have been drawn in to the chest, because there isn’t room for them to straighten out.

The baby’s brain is still developing rapidly, increasing the number of interconnections between individual nerve cells and identifying groups of cells that will perform complicated functions throughout your baby’s lifetime.
