Ohio Passed HB14 Stopping BSL Today!

HB14 takes the Pit Bull Terrier off the "vicious" dog list!

Today around 2:20pm, all hell broke loose across the pit-bull loving social media world. I was glued to my computer, watching the Senate tally the vote on HB14, a bill which would remove pit bull dogs from the definition of “vicious dog” in Ohio, and make many other improvements that would help identify and track dogs that had a history of aggressive behavior. I strained to hear the votes as they came in, and my heart leapt each time I could make out a “yes” over the muffled audio. When all votes were cast, the result was a 27-5 win for dog lovers and enthusiasts across Ohio, and for those who passionately work against breed-specific legislation across the country.

Fireworks went off, hurrays were shouted(and typed) and lots of congratulations were passed all around. I felt very proud of my state. After the goosebumps went away and the tears of joy were wiped, a common question circulated: now what?

The Senate passed a slightly different version of the bill from the one that was handed to them by the House. It included several amendments, some of which were semantic and others which further improved the bill. If you’re a policy nerd like me and would like to read a summary of these amendments, you can find them here.

Since both chambers of the General Assembly need to agree upon a single iteration of the bill, the most likely scenario is that the House will take up the amendments added in the Senate version, and then vote on it again. Once passed, it will move to the Governor for his signature. It will take effect 90 days following the Governor’s signature.

We’re currently warming up for an election year in which all of Ohio’s Representatives and half of its Senators will be up for reelection. It is critical that Ohioans keep the pressure on our legislators so we can get this bill passed before campaign seasons draws them away from the Statehouse and potentially hot-button issues like this one. It is true that given that both houses have already passed versions of HB14, the chances of it becoming the law of the land are very, very good. That said, I’m just not willing to rest my bets on very, very good chances. For the sake of dogs across Ohio, we need to make the passage of HB14 this session an absolute certainty.

Santorum: Baby Created in Rape Still a "Gift"!

At least the people got to see the real candidate before voting!

I hope this candidate realizes that 50% of voters are women and a lot of women have a way of convincing the men in their lives to vote their way!

It is unbelievable that a public speaker would actually make such a statement to the country. He has the right to believe what he want's to believe but to take such a serious issue and create a statement around it and then actually release that statement is completely shocking. What was he thinking? Was he thinking? If he has this kind of mind set on such matters, what else does he believe is in the best interest of the "people"?

In my opinion I believe he should make a public appology to all women in our country and especially to those who have been forced to make such a horrible decision that in it's self is so terribly hard to make and now have had more guilt put on them by a representative who is supposed to be supporting our civil rights not fighting against them.

How is a Kidney Transplant Is Done.

The procedure of kidney transplant lasts for about 3 hours.

Kidney transplant is a surgical procedure conducted for replacing a malfunctioning kidney of the patient with a healthy kidney from the donor. Kidney transplant refers to the surgery performed for the replacement of a failed or diseased kidney with a healthy working kidney from another person. The person who receives the kidney is called a recipient, whereas the person who donates the kidney is called a donor. Kidney transplant is also referred to as renal transplant. It is carried out for the patients suffering from end-stage kidney diseases or renal failure. There are two types of renal failure, namely, acute and chronic.

The acute type causes sudden kidney failure in response to the treatment of other underlying conditions. In majority of the cases, it can be reversed back by managing the cause. In case of chronic type, failure of kidney takes place gradually because of a chronic health condition like hypertension. Chronic kidney failure is treated by dialysis (artificial filtering of blood) or kidney transplantation. Both conditions of renal failure may also result from other kidney diseases.

How is a Kidney Transplant Done
Based on the source of donated kidney, kidney transplant can be classified as deceased-donor or living-donor transplant. In the former case, the donated kidney is from a person who died recently, whereas in the latter case, the donated kidney is obtained from a living person. Living-donor type is further categorized into living related donor (donor is genetically related to the recipient) and living unrelated donor transplantation (donor is not genetically related to the recipient). In all the cases, the donor should be healthy and free of any kidney diseases.

For performing any type of kidney transplant, it is necessary to match the donor's and recipient's blood and other tissue conditions. Considering this, the living related donor matches better than the deceased and living unrelated donor types. In case of a deceased donor type, the healthy kidney collected from the deceased person is preserved in a saline solution for about 48 hours, which is maintained in cold storage conditions. During this time, the concerned physician conducts certain laboratory tests to check the compatibility of the donor and the recipient.

Kidney Transplant Procedure: Living Kidney Donor
For harvesting the kidney from a living donor, the donor is given anesthesia prior to the surgery. The surgeon makes a small cut on the side of the abdomen. The kidney is removed through the cut, which is then stitch after completion of the procedure. The harvested kidney is preserved in cold storage conditions. The donor can live a normal life after removal of the kidney, as the remaining kidney performs the normal bodily functions.

Kidney Transplant Procedure: Kidney Recipient
Prior to the surgery for kidney transplant, the recipient is given general anesthesia. A cut is made in the lower belly portion, from where the donated kidney is introduced inside the body of the recipient. Usually, the failed kidney of the recipient is not removed, as it increases the risk of morbidity. In such a condition, the surgeon connects the renal artery of the donated kidney to the external iliac artery and renal vein to the external iliac vein. In case of infections in the existing kidney of the recipient, the surgeon may consider removal of the failed kidney.

Kidney Transplant: Aftercare
The procedure of kidney transplant lasts for about 3 hours. In living related donor type, the introduced kidney starts functioning immediately, whereas in living unrelated type, it takes about 3-5 days for the normal functioning. For deceased donor transplant, recovery time may be as long as 15 days.

Kidney transplant is not a total cure for renal failure. Though the condition of the recipient improves in maximum cases of transplantation, there are still other unpredictable complications. An individual who has undergone kidney transplant should be administered certain prescribed medications in order to combat any bodily reactions (immune responses). Besides this, he/she has to be monitored throughout the life for any complication of kidney transplant.

Iowa Mother gives birth in a BIG way!

Mom of Iowa's Biggest Baby Makes Childbirth Look Easy!

At birth, full-term babies born in the U.S. tip the scales, on average, at around 7 pounds, 8 ounces, which of course doesn't mean that there aren't plenty of mothers giving birth to babies both smaller and larger. My healthy babies both weighed around 6 pounds (give or take a few ounces) when they made their debut -- though they didn't stay that small for long!

And bigger? Well, a woman in Iowa has just given birth to a baby boy that CNN reports might just be the largest infant ever to have been born "naturally" in the state. How big was the baby, Asher Stewardson? He weighed in at a whopping 13 pounds, 12 ounces, and measured 23 1/2 inches long! And get this, Asher's amazing mother delivered him vaginally, after six hours of pushing and with no drugs (nope, no epidural, no nothin').

I'll just give you a minute to take that in …Back? Yeah, I know, but you can uncross your legs now: The birth story of baby Asher has a totally happy ending. He's healthy (and cute as a button!), and his mom, Kendall Stewardson, is doing great, too.

It's also kind of a good reminder for the rest of us. Assuming Kendall wanted a natural birth and had some idea that her baby was going to be on the large side (Asher's older brother was 12 pounds at birth, though doctors thought, based on ultrasounds, Asher might be somewhat smaller), she got to follow through on her "birth plan," triumphing in a situation that to some people might have seemed nearly impossible.

Isn't it amazing how strong we women can be and how amazing the human body is? Congrats to the Stewardson family on their big, bouncy bundle of joy!

Can you imagine giving birth to a baby as big as Asher vaginally and without drugs?

Solar storm sparks dazzling northern lights!

It was part of the strongest solar storm in years!

A storm from the broiling sun turned the chilly northernmost skies of Earth into an ever-changing and awe-provoking art show of northern lights on Tuesday.

Even experienced stargazers were stunned by the intensity of the aurora borealis that swept across the night sky in northern Scandinavia after the biggest solar flare in six years.

"It has been absolutely incredible," British astronomer John Mason cried from the deck of the MS Midnatsol, a cruise ship plying the fjord-fringed coast of northern Norway.

"I saw my first aurora 40 years ago, and this is one of the best," Mason told The Associated Press, his voice nearly drowning in the cheers of awe-struck fellow passengers.

U.S. space weather experts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Tuesday evening that so far they had heard of no problems from the storm that triggered the auroras, which made it as far south as Wales, where the weather often doesn't cooperate with good viewing.

It was part of the strongest solar storm in years, but the sun is likely to get even more active in the next few months and years, said physicist Doug Biesecker at the U.S. Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colorado.

"To me this was a wake up call. The sun is reminding us that solar max is approaching," Biesecker said. "A lot worse is in store for us. We hope that you guys are paying attention. I would say we passed with flying colors."

Even before particles from the solar storm reached the Earth on Tuesday, a different aurora Monday night was dancing across the sky as far south as Ireland and England, where people rarely get a chance to catch the stunning light show.

Those northern lights were likely just variations in normal background solar wind, not the solar storm that erupted Sunday, Biesecker said.

Tuesday's colorful display may not have moved that far south, limiting its audience, but those who got to see it got brilliance in the sky that had not been around for years.

"It was the biggest northern lights I've seen in the five-six years that I've worked here," said Andreas Hermansson, a tour guide at the Ice Hotel in the Swedish town of Jukkasjarvi, above the Arctic Circle.

He was leading a group of tourists on a bus tour in the area when a green glow that had lingered in the sky for much of the evening virtually exploded into a spectacle of colors around 10:15 p.m.

"We stopped the bus. And suddenly it was just this gigantic display of dancing lights and Technicolor," said Michele Cahill, an Irish psychologist, who was on the tour. "It was an absolutely awesome display. It went on for over an hour. Literally one would have to lie on the ground to capture it all."

But in -30 degrees F (-35 C), that didn't seem like a good idea.

An aurora appears when a magnetic solar wind slams into the Earth's magnetic field, exciting electrons of oxygen and nitrogen.

Brooke Elizabeth Hester is fighting back!

This strong and brave little girl is fighting Cancer~Stage 4 Neuroblastoma. She has a wonderful and very supportive family as well as millions of friends that love her very much. Brooke is 4 years old and loves pink, ponies, cats and dogs, and dinosaurs. She wants to be a veterinarian when she grows up. She has had to under go many tests and treatments including sonograms, nuclear scans and MRI/MRUs. Tests have shown a large tumor is in her abdomen pressing on her left kidney, spine, and internal organs. The prognosis is not good, but there have been advances for neurblastoma in the last few years. The cancer is also in her bone marrow, so she has a long battle ahead. For more information go to http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/brookehester/mystory.

Her family is armed with prayer warriors, friends and family ready to help pull her through this, but financially, they face many days away from home and travelling to MD Anderson in her "road map" of cancer treatment for the mass and bone marrow. There is a great need for financial support during this journey and many ways you can help.

The family has set up a special donation account for Brooke if you are working on a fundraiser or just want to make a charitable contribution. It is through Wells Fargo, and anyone, anywhere can go to any branch and just request to give to the "Brooke Hester Donation Fund."

There is also a campaign on Facebook as a Fundrazr drive at: http://bit.ly/gATd5I

The family has a very strong faith, and know how much the power of prayer works miracles. Please pray for Brook a very sweet, sweet girl.

The 39th Anniversary Of Roe Vs. Wade!

1/22/73 U.S. Supreme Court confirmed freedom of choice!

At the time, the Supreme Court recognized the inherent right to privacy for women, an urgent issue given that women were dying in emergency rooms across the country from self-induced abortions.

But today, women across the nation are disturbed to see a set of politicians doing everything they can to undermine this landmark decision that has stood as a critical safeguard for women's health for four decades.

The best way to reduce the need for abortion is to reduce unintended pregnancy. But in the U.S., politicians are also increasingly putting up roadblocks to access preventive care, including the birth control that helps women avoid unintended pregnancy. In fact, in the past year, the House of Representatives and extreme state legislatures have worked to cut many women off from access to birth control and lifesaving cancer screenings for breast and cervical cancer.

The number one prescription drug for women ages 18-44 years, the average women pays $50 a month for birth control. This is an obvious barrier to access, particularly for low-income women and students. Reproductive rights are a fundamental aspect of women’s economic equality,

When women have access to preventive care --including birth control, breast exams, and pap smears -- it is good for women, good for their families, and good for America.

Last month, women's health advocates said they would sue the US government for allegedly violating the constitutional rights of young teenage girls by denying them over-the-counter access to emergency contraception.

The US secretary of health and human services, Kathleen Sebelius, stepped in to bar girls under the age of 17 from getting the morning-after pill without a prescription.

In short, a whole class of elected officials currently in office is dead set on turning back the clock nearly half a century. And another band of them is waiting in the wings ─ with their eyes on the White House.

Opposing Roe and essential women's health care isn't just bad policy -- it's bad politics. That's because Americans agree with the protection that Roe provides. Polling consistently reaffirms that a majority of Americans support a woman's right to make her own decisions about pregnancy in consultation with her doctor and her family. Politicians who oppose this firmly held notion are swimming against the tide, putting themselves outside the mainstream.

Pres. Obama on Sunday marked the 39th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion by affirming his backing for the right, for decades one of America's most polarizing issues.

"As we mark the 39th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we must remember that this Supreme Court decision not only protects a woman's health and reproductive freedom, but also affirms a broader principle: that government should not intrude on private family matters, I remain committed to protecting a woman's right to choose and this fundamental constitutional right."

We must continue to raise those voices and keep the pressure on. Every day, from now through November, we need to remind politicians that women are watching.

We see what they are doing. We hear what they are saying. And we vote.

Beautiful & Bald Barbie Facebook Campaign!

Bald Barbie Supports Children With Cancer!

Barbie is just shy of 53 years old. She’s survived the Vietnam War, the fall of the Berlin Wall and German reunification, both wars with Iraq and has managed to outlast 10 U.S. Presidents. But she might have just met her match with two cancer survivors.

Jane Bingham and Rebecca Sypin have started an online movement on Facebook requesting Mattel Inc. to create a "Bald Barbie" as a role model for young girls going through chemotherapy or suffering from hair loss conditions such as alopecia.

Why? Cancer has touched both women's lives – Bingham has lymphoma and Sypin’s 12-year-old daughter has leukemia. The friends recognized hair loss was a difficult aspect of cancer treatment, especially for females. A bald doll would reassure girls going through chemotherapy and radiation, as well as reassure girls who experience hair loss because of other disorders. The doll would help them feel beautiful and accepted, according to Sypin and Bingham. In addition, they feel a bald Barbie would raise awareness of children's cancer.

The women, who live on opposite coasts of the U.S., started a Facebook page, “Beautiful and Bald Barbie! Let's see if we can get it made.” The page has garnered over 120, 000 “likes” since the page's advent at Christmas time. Supporters worldwide have added comments, mostly in support, of a bald Barbie. Many of the comments are from childhood cancer survivors who say they would have loved a doll like the proposed Barbie when they were going through treatment. Parents of children with cancer have posted pictures on the page of their beautiful – and bald – daughters asking Mattel to consider creating the doll. A petition in support of the doll is featured on the social change website Change.org and the story has spread to mainstream news organizations.

Interestingly, Mattel created a one-of-a-kind bald Barbie doll for a little girl, Genesis Reyes, in 2011. “Princess Genesis” was made for the 4-year-old girl at the request of a friend of wife of Mattel's chief executive. But, Mattel seems to have broken the mold with Princess Genesis, and so far, has not bowed to the pressure of the social media movement. In statements, the company said they were honored Barbie was being considered as a potential role model for children with cancer, but “Mattel doesn't accept ideas from outside sources.”

Really, Mattel? Certainly a multi-billion dollar company could produce a limited run of the dolls, with a portion of the proceeds donated to childhood cancer organizations. Barbie has had so many incarnations over the years-NASCAR driver, astronaut, Totally Tattoos Barbie, a presidential candidate Barbie, a Barbie in a wheelchair and haute couture Barbies.

Why not a bald Barbie? While companies often believe creating a special line will dilute their brand, in essence a rare line of dolls would actually increase the value of the Barbie brand. Consumers drive brand appeal – in spite of what companies believe–and a bald Barbie would be a wise move on the part of Mattel.

Bingham, Sypin and their supporters are on to something big with their “Beautiful and Bald Barbie” Facebook page. If social media can act as a catalyst for revolution in other countries, I am sure we might see a bald Barbie on the shelves of our local toy stores sooner than later.

Go to http://www.facebook.com/BeautifulandBaldBarbie if you want to support the drive.

What Is SOPA?

Here Are 5 Things You Need to Know.

The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) has got the entire Internet up in arms today. Media justice advocates say the bill is anathema to basic functioning of the Internet; for a system that’s based on relative freedom and connectivity, SOPA would work as the online world’s stingy gatekeeper, giving government the power to shutdown websites altogether.

Today, hundreds of websites are joining in a day of action to SOPA’s threat to freedom of expression on the Internet. Several civil rights and racial justice organizations are joining in what’s been called an “Internet strike,” by closing their websites from 8 am to 8 pm eastern time. Colorlines.com’s Jamilah King, who covers media policy, explains why:

The Internet’s been an important space for communities of color to tell their own stories and advocate for issues they don’t often see in film or on television. SOPA puts that independence in jeopardy. It’ll add yet another barrier to how and what we can communicate.

So, here are the basics on what you need to know.

Who’s behind SOPA? Rep. Lamar Smith, a Texas politician who’s been known mostly for his anti-immigrant stances in recent years. Smith’s got big industry backers, namely: The Recording Industry Association of American, the Motion Picture Association of America (now led by former U.S. Senator Chris Dodd), and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

What’s the justification for SOPA? Supporters of the bill claim that it’ll help copyright holders (think big record labels) protect their content. Rep. Smith has criticized the bill’s opponents and explained that SOPA would only target foreign websites that put American businesses at risk.

But opponents argue that the definition of “foreign infringing sites” is too vague. As it’s written now, they argue, the bill will fundamentally alter the relative freedom with which the Internet currently operates. What’s certain is that it’ll add a level of supervision to the Internet that’s never existed before.

Who’s opposed to SOPA? Basically, every website that you visit regularly. Most notably, Wikipedia, Craigslist, and Reddit, along with thousands of other websites, have chosen to go dark in opposition to the bill and to help educate users about its potential impact. But the list doesn’t stop there: Google, Yahoo, YouTube, and Twitter have also publicly opposed the bill. The White House has also announced that should the bill reach President Obama’s desk, he will veto it.

How would SOPA work? It allows the U.S. attorney general to seek a court order against the targeted offshore website that would, in turn, be served on Internet providers in an effort to make the target virtually disappear. It’s kind of an Internet death penalty.

More specifically, section 102 of SOPA says that, after being served with a removal order:

A service provider shall take technically feasible and reasonable measures designed to prevent access by its subscribers located within the United States to the foreign infringing site (or portion thereof) that is subject to the order…Such actions shall be taken as expeditiously as possible, but in any case within five days after being served with a copy of the order, or within such time as the court may order.

How would it impact me? If you create or consume content on the Internet, under SOPA the government would have the power to pull the plug on your website. If you’re a casual consumer, your favorite websites could be penalized and shut down if they seem to be illegally supporting copyrighted material.

This is especially important for human rights groups and advocates in communities of color, who could faced increased censorship if the bill is passed. The language of the bill makes it easy for the US Attorney General to go after websites it simply sees as a threat.

Vietnam Veteran is in need of a live kidney donor!

Ramon Macias a Vietnam Veteran needs a kidney transplant.

Ramon Macias, US Army, Vietnam '66-'68, 167th Signal Company developed Chronic Kidney disease from exposure to Agent Orange. He is now in need of a kidney transplant and is looking for a live kidney donor. The wait for a kidney that would be a match from a deceased donor is over five years.

Kidney Donor Needed for Vietnam Veteran!

This is on the behalf of a friend who's father needs your help!

I am writing this request for my dad. My dad Ramon Macias (Ma-ci-as), who served in the US Army -during Vietnam in 1966-1968 in the 167th Signal Company. He developed Chronic Kidney disease from exposure to Agent Orange Exposure, and is now needing a transplant. My dad was drafted right after high school, when Duty called, and he answered. He wasn't much younger than 18 years old, as he showed me the picture of him dressed up in that uniform. That picture was for my grandma and how she cried when the news arrived that he was going to Vietnam. Duty called, and he answered while the whole world spit in his face. My dad learned how to be a man in some Gosh forsaken place. Still people think he's a disgrace. While in Vietnam working for Uncle Sam, at 18 yrs old. So duty called, and my dad answered his country to serve, but as an result of Agent Orange, he developed chronic kidney disease (service connected). He is now needing a living kidney donor. I (his daughter) am not not able to donate one of my own.

We have been told that the wait list is at least 5 + years on the waitlist just for a deceased donor. The benefits of receiving from a living donor is that the wait list wouldn't be as long.

If you're interested in being my father's living donor, please contact my father's transplant coordinator, JoAnn Johnson @ the VA Nashville Transplant Center, in Nashville, Tn. Her phone number direct is 615-873-8668, if not available leave a voicemail message and she will return your call. Nashville VA Transplant Center, will pay for all travel, medical expenses to Nashville. There will be no out of pocket fees (medical, etc) for this gift.

Please contact my dad's transplant coordinator, Joanne Johnson at the Nashville VA Tennessee. (1-615-873-8668 ) They will ask you some questions regarding whether you're willingness to donate. THE VA will pay for your travel to Nashville for this. Please email me as well, to notify me of the interest in providing a gift of life to my dad. Thanks again for looking at this ad, even if you're not interested, please pass along to someone who might be interested. May God Bless you always.

Give Life, Be A Living Kidney Donor!

KIDNEY TRANSPLANT DONOR REQUIREMENTS:

In 2009, 38 percent of the 16,830 kidney transplants were made possible by the bravery and generosity of living kidney donors. In that year, 6,388 lives were changed because of this life-saving act. All of those donors were willing to undergo surgery to have one of their kidneys removed and live the rest of their lives with a single kidney so that someone else could benefit.

The criteria to become a donor are relatively easy to satisfy, which means that an increasing number of individuals can become donors.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:
The University of California San Francisco Medical Center requires donors to be between the ages of 18 and 65. Donors must be reasonably fit nonsmokers. Transplant centers often reject overweight volunteers until they lose weight. Donors need not be related to the recipient. Surgeons perform thousands of transplants every year between nonrelatives.

BLOOD TYPE:
An ideal donor has either the same blood type as the recipient or has type O blood, which is safe for any recipient. The Rh factor does not matter. Rh factors are immunological markers found in blood that are characterized as positive or negative. For example, a type A negative donor can give a kidney to an type A positive recipient. In some situations, a kidney donor may be willing to donate to a particular person, such as a friend or relative, but cannot do so because he is a poor match. In these cases, donors should explore paired donation. Through paired donation, a poorly matched donor can donate to a more suitable recipient, and in exchange, his friend or relative receives a kidney from a different donor, one who is also poorly matched to a particular candidate.

TISSUE MATCHING:
A prospective donor should also have a close tissue match with the recipient. Doctors base this match on six different histocompatibility antigens, immune response markers that characterize the tissue. Doctors determine histocompatibility antigens of prospective donors using a simple blood test. Perfect matching is not required, but some matches are better than others. If a prospective donor is excluded because of an unsuitable tissue match, paired donation is, again, a possible option.

PHYSICAL EXAMINATION:
Donors should be free from medical issues that are risks for donation and transplantation. For example, a common medical exclusion for a donor is hypertension. Doctors also evaluate possible cardiovascular and kidney problems because these would exclude someone from donating, as would a prior history of some cancers. Other exclusions include diabetes, intravenous drug use, and certain infectious diseases—hepatitis, for example. Donors who are excluded for medical reasons can often be reevaluated once the condition has resolved.

PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION:
Prospective donors also undergo psychological evaluations to confirm that they are free from any mental health issues that would make the procedure risky. For example, donors who are mentally unstable are not good candidates because they may be unable to care for themselves properly after surgery. Physicians also make an effort to select donors who would not be psychologically harmed if a recipient ultimately lost the donated kidney.

The History of Aromatherapy...

For 6000 years Aromatherapy has been a good alternative method of healing.

The humble beginning of Aromatherapy, which literally means therapy of healing through the sense of smell.

Aromatherapy dates back thousands of years and has been used by most of the ancient civilizations. Most of the stories of ‘the medicine man’ were of professionals schooled in the use of essential oils.

The Chinese civilizations used some form of aromatics dating back to 2700 BC. These historical references contain detailed information on over 300 plants and their uses. The Chinese also used aromatics in religious ceremonies, a tradition which is still practiced today. The Chinese were also involved in other ancient therapies such as massage and acupressure, hence the term eastern medicine.

Aromatherapy has also been used for many centuries in India. Ayurveda, the traditional medical system of India, uses dried and fresh herbs, as well as aromatic massage as important aspects of treatment.

In ancient Egypt, aromatherapy was a way of life. The essential oils of plants were used during religious rituals raising a higher consciousness or promoting a state of tranquility. Egyptians used the principles of this art in their cooking as well. Specific herbs aided in the digestive process, protected against infection and improving the immune system.

The Greeks acquired most of their medical knowledge from the Egyptians and used it to further their own discoveries. Hypocrites commonly known as the “Father of Medicine” was the first to study this scientifically. The Greeks found that some fragrances were stimulating while others had relaxing properties. Aromatherapy was used for both cosmetic and medicinal purposes.

The Romans learned from the Greeks and became well known for scented baths followed by massage with aromatic oils. With the decline of the Roman Empire, the use of aromatics faded and the knowledge of their use were virtually lost.

One of the few places where the tradition of Aromatherapy continued was in monasteries, where monks used plants from herbal gardens to produce infused oils, herbal teas and medicines. During the Middle Ages, it was discovered that certain aromatic derivatives helped to prevent the spread of infection.

The revival of the use of essential oils is credited to a Persian physician and philosopher known as Avicenna. The Persians initiated a method of extraction known as distillation, and study of the therapeutic use of plants once again became popular. The knowledge of distillation spread and the lost process was once again returned to Europe. By 1200 AD, essential oils were being produced in Germany and were based mainly on herbs and spices brought from Africa and the Far East.

When the conquistadors invaded South America, even more medicinal plants and aromatic oils were discovered, and the wide variety of medicinal plants found in Montezuma’s gardens provided a basis for many new and important remedies and treatments.

Throughout the northern continent, Native American Indians were using aromatic oils and producing their own herbal remedies, which were discovered when settlers began to make their way across the plains of the New World.

Although herbs and aromatics had been used in other world cultures for many centuries, it was not until the 19th century that scientists in Europe and Great Britain began researching the effects of essential oils on humans. It was French chemist, Rene Maurice Gattefosse who discovered the healing powers of lavender oil after burning his hand in his laboratory. He published a book on the anti-microbial effects of the oils in 1937 and the term “Aromatherapy” was born.

The discovery of Penicillin and creation of synthetic drugs has conditioned modern society to readily accept instant cures. In many medical circles, aromatherapy and holistics as a whole are considered “soft” sciences, because cures are less speedy and are difficult to prove scientifically. The proof of the effectiveness of aromatherapy lies in our ancestors, who survived throughout the ages in this hard world equipped with only a natural instincts.

During World War II, the French army surgeon Dr. Jean Valnet used essential oils as antiseptics. Later, Madame Marguerite Maury elevated aromatherapy as a holistic therapy. She started prescribing essential oils as remedy for her patients. She is also credited with the modern use of essential oils in massage. Aromatherapy works the best when used on the mind and body simultaneously.

Even after reading the history of aromatherapy many westerners remain skeptical of this science. Only after they consider the modern uses of aromatherapy do they say “Oh, I get it.”

Some of the more common and mainstream examples of aromatherapy include: Mentholated vapor rub (to loosen congestion in the chest and breathing passages), Spa treatments such as the use of Eucalyptus especially in a steam room, Perfumes, Colognes, deodorizers and room fresheners.

FIND THE PITBULL...

Only one of the pictures below features the real American PitBull Terrier. Take the test to see if you can find it. To find the breed of a dog, click on image. Note there are no mixes or rescue dogs of unknown background who's breed could be debated. All dogs have been picked from breeders' websites
and should be good representatives of their breed.

When you are done, ask your family and friends to take to test and watch the results. For many people, a Pit Bull is a a big headed dog, or a dog with cropped ears. For some it's a brindle dog,
a big, stocky dog, or one with an eye patch.

Often dogs that attack are identified as pit bulls when they are not. There are 20+ breeds that are
commonly incorrectly identified as pit bulls.

Veterans Rebuild Their Lives with Service Dogs!

Service dogs can add assistance and joy to a veteran's life!

As you're aware, veterans in America still do not receive the treatment and care they deserve. Veterans have laid down their lives to protect our country, and we have a moral right to provide for them after they return from service.

Service dogs are just one way we can give back to our veterans. Those who served in the armed services, and especially during wartime, can experience many emotions and difficult circumstances when they arrive back home. At times it can be hard to return to normal life, performing regular daily activities, connecting with others, or managing the stress of what they've been through. These difficulties are compounded when a soldier has been injured or is experiencing post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Service dogs can add assistance and joy to a veteran's life, without adding the extra burden of payment for services. In addition, helping train a service dog can enhance a veteran's experience back at home and help him or her manage PTSD.

Shelter dogs in particular should not be overlooked when considering a dog for service training. Shelter dogs are in more dire need of rescue than breeder or pet store dogs, and can provide just the same quality of service.

I am writing to ask that you continue to advocate for our veterans by crafting legislation that would create a program that would allow them to help train all types of healthy dogs, including those from shelters. In doing so, we may be able to save the lives of more veterans and dogs in need.

U.S. Supports U.N. Anti-Free Speech Plan

The United States under President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

From Forbes: The US has officially adopted UN resolution 16/18. An initiative of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (formerly Organization of Islamic Conferences), the confederacy of 56 Islamic states, Resolution 16/18 seeks to limit speech that is viewed as “discriminatory” or which involves the “defamation of religion” – specifically that which can be viewed as “incitement to imminent violence.”

Whatever that means.

Initially proposed in response to alleged discrimination against Muslims in the aftermath of 9/11 and in an effort to clamp down on anti-Muslim attacks in non-Muslim countries, Resolution 16/18 has been through a number of revisions over the years in order to make it palatable to American representatives concerned about U.S. Constitutional guarantees of free speech. Previous versions of the Resolution, which sought to criminalize blasphemous speech and the “defamation of religion,” were regularly rejected by the American delegation and by the US State Department, which insisted that limitations on speech – even speech deemed to be racist or blasphemous – were at odds with the Constitution. But this latest version, which includes the “incitement to imminent violence” phrase – that is, which criminalizes speech which incites violence against others on the basis of religion, race, or national origin – has succeeded in winning US approval –despite the fact that it (indirectly) places limitations as well on speech considered “blasphemous.”

What’s worse, the measure codifies into the UN agenda support for the very notion democracies now wrestle with, and which threatens to destroy the very fabric of our culture: tolerance of the intolerant, or rather, the question of whether a tolerant society must also tolerate ways of life that are intolerant – that oppress women, say, or advocate violence against homosexuals, or force strangers to marry against their will. It is, in fact, this very concept that the OIC has long pressured Western governments to adopt in other ways, and that those supporting the adoption of Sharia law in the west have emphasized. Yet if we fall into that trap – as it appears we are – we will have lost the very heart of who we are.

Pit Bull Service Dog Reunited With Disabled Vet!

Snickers, a pit bull mix, is ringing in the new year at home.

Thanks to U.S. District Judge Mark Bennett, who granted a temporary injunction on Wednesday, allowing Snickers to be immediately returned to his owner Jim Sak, a retired Chicago police officer.

Sak, a disabled Vietnam War veteran, was partially paralyzed after suffering a stroke in 2008, which was followed by brain surgery. Snickers is a certified therapy dog who aids him with a number of tasks from helping him stand and walk to getting help in an emergency. That was Snickers’ job until Sak and his wife Peggy Leifer moved to Aurelia, IA, last month to be near her elderly mother.

Days after moving, someone reported the Sak to city officials due to the breed ban the city has in place.

“I didn’t know there was a Pit Bull ban (here),” said Sak.

GPS shoes help wandering Alzheimer’s patients!

The first batch of 3,000 pairs of shoes have been shipped two years after announcing development.

The first shoes with built-in GPS devices — to help track down dementia-suffering seniors who wander off and get lost — are set to hit the US market this month, the manufacturer says.

GTX Corp said the first batch of 3,000 pairs of shoes has been shipped to the footwear firm Aetrex Worldwide, two years after plans were announced to develop the product. The shoes will sell at around $300 a pair and buyers will be able to set up a monitoring service to locate “wandering” seniors suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

Andrew Carle, a professor at George Mason University’s College of Health and Human Services who was an adviser on the project, said the shoes are likely to save lives and avoid embarrassing and costly incidents with the elderly.
“It’s especially important for people in the earliest stages of Alzheimer’s who are at the highest risk,” Carle said. “They might be living in their home but they’re confused. They go for a walk and they can get lost for days.”

Carle said studies indicate more than five million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s, a number expected to quadruple in the coming years. He said 60 per cent of sufferers will wander and become lost and up to half of those lost who are not found within 24 hours may die, from dehydration, exposure or injury.
Other devices such as bracelets or pendants can provide similar protection but seniors often reject these.
“The primary reason is that paranoia is a manifestation of the disease,” Carle said. “If you put something on someone with Alzeheimer’s that they don’t recognise, they remove it. If it’s a wristwatch and it’s not their wristwatch, they will take it off. So you have to hide it.”

The GPS system, which is implanted in the heel of what appears to be a normal walking shoe, allows family members or carers to monitor the wearer and to set up a “geofence” that would trigger an alert if the person strays beyond a certain area. The shoes are being developed by GTX Corp., which makes miniaturised Global Positioning Satellite tracking and location - transmitting technology, and Aetrex. They received certification from the Federal Communications Commission this year for the system. The makers say the market for such shoes is growing, given the soaring costs of Alzheimer’s.
“This is a significant milestone for both companies and while the $604 billion worldwide cost of dementia has become and will continue to be a significant fiscal challenge, the under $300 GPS enabled shoes will ease the enormous physical and emotional burden borne by Alzheimer’s victims, caregivers and their geographically distant family members,” said Patrick Bertagna, chief executive of GTX Corp.

Professor Carle said the original idea was to develop the shoes for children and long - distance runners but the makers changed the plan when he offered his advice, noting that the devices can also help ease a lot of anxiety about seniors who want to remain active.
